Performance appraisal justice and employees' work engagement in the public sector: Making the most of performance appraisal design

Abstract Regarding organizational justice, performance appraisal (PA) systems are among the most crucial mechanisms shaping employee work experience. Nonetheless, research has mostly neglected to explain relationship between characteristics of PA systems, employees' perceptions and engagement in public sector. Based on a combination observational experimental data from 11 sector organizations Italy, this article aims unfold nature these relationships. Following recent calls for diversified methodological designs, structural equation modeling with discrete choice experiment is provided. The results show that designing rater–ratee feedback sessions calibration leads fairer perceived PAs, justice being associated engagement.
